Masutatsu Ōyama
Mas Oyama’s Brief History
Mas Oyama, born on July 27, 1923, in Southern Korea, started learning the Chinese martial art Fist of Chakuriki in Manchuria at the age of 9. In 1938, he became a disciple of Master Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate.
In 1946, Oyama retreated to the mountains for rigorous training. The next year, he won the All Japan Karate-do Tournament. He studied Goju-ryu Karate under Master Gogen Yamaguchi, rising to the position of Vice Chairman in the organization and achieving a 9th Dan degree.
In 1948, Oyama undertook 18 months of solitary mountain training. By 1950, he was training against live bulls, living near a cattle slaughterhouse, and instantly killing four out of 47 bulls. In 1952, he traveled to the United States, conducting karate instructions and demonstrations at 32 locations and participating in seven real matches. The following year, he famously broke a bull’s horn with a Shuto (knife hand) strike during a fight in Chicago.
From 1955, Oyama toured South America and Europe with Bepford Davy, President of Chrysler Corp, engaging in numerous mixed martial arts matches. In 1956, he opened the first Oyama Dojo in a former ballet studio. In 1957, he fought another bull in Mexico City. In January 1958, he published “What is Karate,” which sold 500,000 copies. Later that year, he was invited by the FBI in Washington D.C. and West Point Military Academy for karate demonstrations and instructions.
In 1964, Oyama Dojo accepted the Thai Boxing challenge to Karate-do, winning two out of three matches. By 1971, his name and Kyokushin karate gained widespread recognition in Japan through the popular comic series “Karate Baka Ichidai” and the 1975 film “World’s Strongest Karate.” That same year, he organized the first Kyokushin Kai World Karate-do Open Tournament.
Mas Oyama passed away on April 26, 1994, from lung cancer at the age of 70. He traveled the world, researching and competing in real matches against various martial arts styles. Under his leadership, Kyokushin became the largest karate organization, with 12 million students in 140 countries. He is also renowned for initiating the Full-Contact, Bare-Knuckle tournament system.
Yoshikazu Matsushima, born on April 23, 1947, began his karate training at the Ikebukuro dojo in Tokyo, Japan, in 1965 under the guidance of Sosai Oyama.
Throughout his career, he has taught karate internationally and made numerous appearances in magazines, television shows, and movies to promote Kyokushinkai karate. He was even featured in Sosai’s book “Advanced Karate.” In 1989, he received a special award from Sosai Oyama in recognition of his efforts in promoting Kyokushin Karate.
As one of the earliest appointed Branch Chiefs, Kancho Matsushima has dedicated over 45 years to training, teaching, and advancing Kyokushin karate. His commitment to preserving and positively growing Sosai’s karate remains unwavering.
In November 1998, Yoshikazu Matsushima was elected President of the International Karate Organization Matsushima Group. Kancho continues to travel globally, sharing his extensive knowledge and expertise in the Kyokushin style of karate.
Sensei Somnath Chanda began his karate journey in 1980 under the guidance of Hanshi Shivaji Ganguly. In 1981, he joined Kancho Dadi Bulsara for practice in Park Circus, continuing his training with Hanshi Shivaji Ganguly during this period. Sensei Somnath Chanda remained dedicated to his training with Hanshi Shivaji Ganguly until 2013, after which he branched out to establish a new foundation known as the Bengal Kyoukushin Karate Association (BKKA).
Throughout his career, Sensei Somnath Chanda was influenced by notable international figures. In 1996, he attended a Summer Camp with the Switzerland Branch Chief in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1999, he served as the India team manager in Tokyo, Japan, and held the position of Chief Referee in Sri Lanka. That same year, he conducted a training camp in Thailand.
Sensei Somnath Chanda has made significant contributions to karate in India. He served as a referee in the WAMA Cup during the years 1986, 1988, and 1991. His dedication to martial arts is evident in his progression through the ranks: achieving the rank of Sodan in 1991, Nidan in 1994, Sandan in 2006, and Yon Dan in 2023.
