KYOKUSHIN

In Japanese, Kyokushin means “The ultimate truth”, reflecting the deep commitment to self-improvement, discipline, and respect that underpins the practice. Kyokushin is a style of stand-up fighting and is rotated in a philosophy of self-improvement, discipline and hard training, full contact karate that was founded in 1964 by Masutatsu Oyama. Kyokushin is renowned for its rigorous training methods, intense physical conditioning, and emphasis on realistic combat techniques. Practitioners engage in sparring, kata (forms), and breaking techniques to develop their skills and spirit. Since it’s inception, Kyokushin has directly spawned thousands of martial arts champions. Indeed full-contact knockdown fighters of today can trace their current methodology in some way to the success of Kyokushin.

Founder

Masutatsu Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin karate, was a Korean-Japanese martial artist who became legendary for his incredible strength, indomitable spirit, and innovative approach to martial arts. Born Choi Yeong-eui in 1923, Oyama moved to Japan and immersed himself in various martial arts disciplines. His quest for the ultimate fighting style led him to create Kyokushin karate, blending techniques from karate, boxing, and other combat arts. Oyama’s legacy is carried on through the countless dojos and practitioners around the world who adhere to his teachings and philosophy.
